Math Mastery Progression

Count to algebra — one proven step at a time.

A sequential K–12 mathematics track covering eight grade-band phases from counting and number sense through Algebra 1. Each phase has a verified mastery gate: 80%+ on a Khan Academy course mastery assessment or a teacher-graded test. Proof is a screenshot with the student's name visible. No phase can be started until the previous phase is complete — the gate is enforced by the platform, not just by self-report.

Counting & Number Sense

Grades K–1. The foundation for all arithmetic. Students who skip this phase or have gaps in place value struggle with addition and subtraction. Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Early Math or Grade 1 Math mastery meter, or teacher-graded assessment.

Addition & Subtraction Fluency

Grades 1–2. Builds on number sense. Fluency with addition and subtraction facts within 20 is required before multi-digit operations are meaningful. Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Grade 2 Math mastery meter, or teacher-graded assessment.

Multiplication & Division

Grades 2–4. Fluency with multiplication facts and understanding of division as inverse operation are prerequisites for fractions and ratios. Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Grade 4 Math mastery meter, or teacher-graded assessment.

Fractions & Decimals

Grades 3–5. Fractions as numbers on the number line — not just 'pieces of a pizza'. This conceptual shift is the most common gap that blocks proportional reasoning. Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Grade 5 Math mastery meter, or teacher-graded assessment.

Ratios & Proportional Reasoning

Grades 5–6. Ratios and percentages in real-world contexts. Required before pre-algebra (variables scale ratios). Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Grade 6 Math mastery meter, or teacher-graded assessment.

Geometry & Measurement

Grades 4–6. Area, perimeter, volume. Runs parallel to ratios in practice — completed before pre-algebra to ensure geometric intuition is in place for coordinate graphing. Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Geometry units or teacher-graded assessment.

Pre-Algebra

Grades 6–8. Variables, integers, and linear equations. The bridge between arithmetic and algebra. Students who rush past this phase account for the majority of Algebra 1 retakes. Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Pre-algebra mastery meter, or teacher-graded assessment.

Algebra 1

Grades 7–9. The gateway course. Linear equations, systems, polynomials, and quadratic introduction. Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Algebra 1 mastery meter, or teacher-graded Algebra 1 unit test. This is the capstone of the Phase 1 Math track.

Free community and problem sets for students who want deeper challenge beyond the mastery gate. Especially useful at the Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 phases for students aiming at competition math or advanced coursework.

Free alternative to Khan Academy for practice and explanation. Useful as a second opinion when a student is stuck on a specific concept — different worked examples sometimes click where Khan Academy's approach doesn't.
