Understand fractions as parts of a whole
2–3 weeks (20 min/day)
Learn to name, compare, and find equivalent fractions. Given a fraction like 3/4, the student can draw a model showing 3 shaded parts out of 4, place it on a number line, and find an equivalent fraction (6/8). A parent or teacher confirms the student can do this for any fraction with denominators 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10.
Proof required
Submit a photo of a completed worksheet showing at least 10 fraction problems: naming fractions from models, drawing fraction models, placing fractions on a number line, and finding equivalent fractions — with a parent or teacher note confirming the answers.
What gets checked
- All four types of problem included: name, draw, place on number line, find equivalent
- 8 of 10 problems correct
- Denominators covered include at least 4, 6, and 8 (not just 2 and 4)
Common mistakes
- Understanding the fraction symbol without connecting it to a model — '3/4' must mean something tangible (3 of 4 equal parts) before operations on fractions make sense
- Skipping equivalent fractions because they feel abstract — equivalent fractions are required for adding fractions with different denominators at the next level

What a verifier looks for
- Point to a fraction (e.g. 5/6) and ask the student to draw the model — they should shade 5 of 6 equal parts
- Ask for an equivalent fraction: 'what is another way to write 1/2?' — they should say 2/4 or 3/6
- Place a finger on a blank number line between 0 and 1 and ask 'where would 3/4 go?' — they should mark the third of four equal divisions

Add fractions and introduce decimals
2 weeks (20 min/day)
Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, and connect fractions to decimals using tenths and hundredths. A parent or teacher gives 10 fraction addition/subtraction problems and 5 fraction-to-decimal conversion problems (e.g. 1/4 = 0.25) and checks the answers. The student should also be able to place decimals on a number line.
Proof required
Submit a photo of completed work showing 10 fraction addition/subtraction problems (same denominator) and 5 fraction-to-decimal conversions, with the work shown for each — and a parent or teacher note confirming the answers.
What gets checked
- 8 of 10 fraction addition/subtraction problems correct, work shown
- Fractions simplified to lowest terms where applicable
- 5 fraction-to-decimal conversions correct using denominators 2, 4, 5, 10, 100
Common mistakes
- Adding numerators AND denominators (e.g. 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/6 instead of 2/3) — this is the most common fraction error; reinforce that the denominator names the type of part and doesn't change when parts are combined
- Treating decimals as a separate topic from fractions — 0.25 = 25/100 = 1/4 should be connected explicitly, not memorized in isolation

What a verifier looks for
- Check that fraction addition shows the working (e.g. 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5) — not just the answer
- Ask the student to explain why 1/3 + 1/3 = 2/3 and not 2/6 — they should reference equal parts of the same size
- For decimal conversions: ask 'what decimal is the same as 3/4?' without a calculator — should answer 0.75

Pass Fractions and Decimals assessment at 80%
2–3 days (review and consolidation)
Reach 80% mastery on the Khan Academy 4th or 5th Grade Fractions and Decimals units. A teacher-graded test covering fraction concepts, fraction arithmetic, and decimal conversions at 80% or above is also accepted. This is the level gate for Level 5 (Ratios and Proportions).
Proof required
Submit a screenshot of your Khan Academy 4th or 5th Grade Math course showing 80%+ in the course mastery meter, specifically covering fractions and decimals (or a teacher-graded test on fractions and decimals scoring 80%+). Your name must be visible.
What gets checked
- 80%+ on the overall course or on the fractions and decimals units specifically
- Both fraction concepts (comparing, equivalent) and fraction arithmetic (addition/subtraction) covered
- Decimal section included — not just fractions
Common mistakes
- Covering only fraction concepts and skipping fraction arithmetic — both must be covered to pass this level
- Confusing the course-level mastery percentage with the unit-level percentage — submit the full course summary
