Memorize times tables 1 through 10
3–4 weeks (daily 10-min drill, tables 1–10 in sequence)
Achieve instant recall of all multiplication facts from 1×1 to 10×10. A parent or teacher administers a 3-minute timed test of all 100 facts and confirms 90 or more are answered correctly. The goal is fluency — not just accuracy, but speed, because slow multiplication recall causes errors in all higher math.
Proof required
Submit a photo of a completed 100-fact timed multiplication test (all tables 1–10, 3-minute limit) with a parent or teacher note confirming the score and timing.
What gets checked
- 90 of 100 facts answered correctly within 3 minutes
- All tables 1–10 included — not just the easy ones
- Verifier observed the test conditions (no looking at a chart during the test)
Common mistakes
- Learning tables in sequence (1s, 2s, 3s…) without mixing them — isolated fluency doesn't transfer to mixed recall; always mix tables in daily drills after learning each new set
- Practising only the multiplication direction and skipping 'what is 56 divided by 7?' — both directions should be practised from the start

What a verifier looks for
- Print a 100-fact multiplication grid (random order, all tables 1–10), set a 3-minute timer, and score the result
- Look at the error pattern — if errors cluster around 6×7, 7×8, 8×9, those are the most commonly forgotten facts; target them in daily drill
- 90 of 100 in 3 minutes is the gate; encourage the student to aim for 95+ before submitting

Divide and solve multi-step word problems
1–2 weeks (20 min/day)
Apply multiplication and division to solve word problems, including multi-step problems that require more than one operation. A parent or teacher gives 10 word problems (at least 5 requiring division and 3 requiring two operations) and checks that both the setup and the answer are correct. Division must include the relationship between multiplication and division (6×7=42, so 42÷7=6).
Proof required
Submit a photo of 10 completed word problems involving multiplication and division (at least 5 division problems, at least 3 requiring two steps) with the equation and answer written for each, and a parent or teacher note confirming answers.
What gets checked
- Equations written for each problem — not just answers
- 8 of 10 problems correct
- At least 3 problems require two steps (e.g. total ÷ groups = per group, then multiply again)
Common mistakes
- Setting up the wrong operation — dividing when the problem needs multiplication — re-reading the question to identify what is being asked for (total? each group? number of groups?) prevents this
- Skipping the written equation and computing mentally — the equation shows whether the student correctly identified the operation

Pass 3rd or 4th Grade Math assessment at 80%
3–5 days (review and consolidation)
Reach 80% mastery on the Khan Academy 3rd or 4th Grade Math course (whichever covers multiplication and division at the appropriate level). A teacher-graded test covering times tables, division, and multi-step word problems at 80% or above is also accepted. This is the level gate for Level 4 (Fractions and Decimals).
Proof required
Submit a screenshot of your Khan Academy 3rd or 4th Grade Math course showing 80%+ in the course mastery meter (or a teacher-graded test on multiplication, division, and word problems scoring 80%+). Your name must be visible.
What gets checked
- 80%+ shown in the course summary across all multiplication and division units
- Course includes both multiplication facts and division word problems — not just fluency drills
- Student's name visible on the screenshot or test
Common mistakes
- Completing only the multiplication units and skipping division — both must be included in the course summary
- Submitting a mastery percentage from a single unit (e.g. 'multiplication fluency') rather than the full course summary
