Establish current USTA NTRP rating

1–3 months (one league season)

Register with USTA and play in rated league or tournament matches to establish an official NTRP rating. Self-rating at 3.5 without computer-rated match results is not credible proof — the official rating comes from playing sanctioned matches. Register at usta.com and enter a local league.

Proof required

Submit: (1) USTA profile screenshot showing your current NTRP rating; (2) record of at least 3 sanctioned matches played.

What gets checked

  • USTA profile screenshot shows an official computer-generated rating — not a self-assessment
  • Match records show opponent names and results — not just personal logs
  • Matches are from a USTA-sanctioned league or tournament

Common mistakes

  • Self-rating at 3.5 without playing rated matches — this cannot be verified and is not the proof standard
  • Playing only casual matches with no USTA sanctioning — these do not affect the official rating

What a verifier looks for

  • Check that USTA profile shows a computer-generated rating — not self-rated
  • Verify match records are from sanctioned league or tournament play

Compete in full USTA league season

3–4 months (one league season)

Complete a full USTA Adult League season with at least 6 rated matches. Track your win/loss record and note which aspects of play are keeping you below 3.5 (net approach, serve consistency, shot selection under pressure).

Proof required

Submit: (1) USTA league season summary showing matches played, wins/losses, and level played at; (2) self-assessment of 2–3 specific skills to develop to reach 3.5.

What gets checked

  • Season summary shows 6+ matches — not fewer
  • Level played at is 3.0 or 3.5 — playing lower inflates results without advancement
  • Self-assessment names specific technical gaps — not 'need to improve generally'

Common mistakes

  • Playing only at 2.5 level against weaker opponents — no NTRP advancement without competing at the right level
  • Not tracking match statistics and relying on feelings rather than patterns

Achieve official USTA 3.5 computer rating

End of league season when ratings are published

Receive an official USTA computer-generated NTRP rating of 3.5 (or above). The computer rating is assigned after sufficient match data and overrides the self-rating. Your USTA profile will show '3.5 C' (computer-rated). Screenshot your profile showing this rating.

Proof required

Submit: (1) USTA profile screenshot showing NTRP rating 3.5 or higher with 'C' (computer-rated) designation; (2) match history summary showing the season's results.

What gets checked

  • Rating shows 'C' designation — computer-rated, not self-rated ('S')
  • Rating is 3.5 or above — 3.0 does not satisfy this outcome
  • Profile screenshot is current — not from a prior year

Common mistakes

  • Receiving a 3.0 computer rating and claiming 3.5 — the computer rating is objective
  • Having a self-rated 3.5 without enough match data for a computer rating — not the proof standard

What a verifier looks for

  • Confirm 'C' designation on the USTA rating — not 'S' (self-rated)
  • Verify rating shown is 3.5 or above
  • Check profile screenshot is current season
