Build cold-water open water capacity
6–18 months of cold-water acclimatisation
Complete at least one documented 4-hour continuous open water swim in water at or below 16°C. This is the core physical prerequisite for Channel relay qualification — you need to demonstrate you can sustain cold-water swimming over multiple relay legs without a wetsuit.
Proof required
Submit: GPS track showing a 4+ hour open water swim; water temperature log from a certified thermometer; observer attestation if available.
What gets checked
- GPS track shows 4+ continuous hours in open water — pool swims do not count for Channel prep
- Water temperature is documented at ≤16°C — the Channel's standard qualifying condition
- Track is from a GPS watch or device, not manually plotted
Common mistakes
- Rushing cold-water acclimatisation: attempting 4 hours in cold water before building up through shorter cold swims leads to hypothermia risk — progressive exposure over many months is the standard
- Wetsuit training: practising only in a wetsuit does not prepare you for the Channel relay, which is almost always completed in standard swimsuit

What a verifier looks for
- Is the GPS track from a wearable device showing 4+ continuous hours in open water?
- Is the water temperature documented at ≤16°C during the swim?
- Is there observer attestation if the swim was unsupported?
Register team with CS&PF and complete logistics
6–12 months before crossing (CS&PF slots fill quickly)
Register your relay team with the Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation (CS&PF), arrange a certified pilot boat, confirm team rota, and complete all pre-crossing admin. The CS&PF registration is mandatory — all legitimate English Channel relay completions are verified by them.
Proof required
Submit: CS&PF team registration confirmation email or reference number; relay plan document naming team members, planned swimming rota, and pilot boat booking.
What gets checked
- CS&PF registration confirmation shows a booking reference and is from the official CS&PF email domain
- Relay plan names all 6 team members (standard relay size) with planned leg durations
- Pilot boat booking is confirmed — not provisional
Common mistakes
- Late registration: CS&PF slots for popular summer crossing windows fill 12–18 months in advance — begin registration as soon as M1 is achievable
- Team dropout: relay teams frequently lose members to injury or scheduling — build a waiting list of trained alternates

What a verifier looks for
- Does the registration confirmation show an official CS&PF booking reference?
- Does the relay plan name all team members and include a pilot boat confirmation?
- Is the crossing window confirmed as a real booking — not provisional?
Complete the English Channel relay
1 crossing day (tide window: 12–16 hours typical)
Complete the England-to-France (or France-to-England) crossing as a registered relay team under CS&PF observation with a certified pilot. The CS&PF-issued completion certificate is the definitive proof — it is the only recognised official record of an English Channel relay.
Proof required
Submit: CS&PF-issued relay completion certificate showing your team name, crossing date, and team member names.
What gets checked
- Certificate is issued by the CS&PF — not a third-party relay organiser
- Your name is listed as a relay team member on the certificate
- Crossing date is documented
Common mistakes
- Weather withdrawal: crossing windows can be aborted at any point by the pilot — build flexibility for rescheduling into your booking
- Leg timing mistakes: relay legs that run too long or too short can compromise the team's overall crossing time — agree hard leg durations before crossing and brief the team

What a verifier looks for
- Is the certificate issued by the CS&PF with a booking reference?
- Is the submitter's name listed as a relay team member?
- Is the crossing date shown?
