Complete an Ironman 70.3 as prerequisite

6–12 months before full Ironman

Complete a full Ironman 70.3 (1.9K swim, 90K bike, 21.1K run) within the 12 months preceding your full Ironman attempt. This is both a fitness prerequisite and the primary time predictor for full Ironman planning. Most coaching frameworks use your 70.3 time × 2.15–2.3 as a full Ironman finish time estimate.

Proof required

Submit: official Ironman 70.3 finisher certificate or athlete tracking result showing your name, race name, and finish time.

What gets checked

  • Result is from an official Ironman 70.3 branded event or equivalent sanctioned half-iron distance triathlon
  • Finish time is shown and you finished (not a DNF) within the cutoff
  • Certificate or athlete tracking link is publicly accessible

Common mistakes

  • Entering a full Ironman without a 70.3 completion: the jump from Olympic-distance triathlon to full Ironman without a half-iron stepping stone leaves critical distance-specific physiological and logistical preparation undone
  • Racing too close: attempting a full Ironman within 8 weeks of your 70.3 leaves insufficient recovery time for the full Ironman training block

What a verifier looks for

  • Is the result from an official Ironman 70.3 or equivalent sanctioned half-iron event?
  • Did you finish within the cutoff — not a DNF?

Complete a 24-week Ironman training block

24–30 weeks

Log 24–30 weeks of full Ironman preparation, peaking at 12+ hours of training per week across all three disciplines. The build must include at least one 200K+ bike ride, one 30K+ long run, and a 4000m+ pool swim in a single week. Export the full log from Strava or Garmin Connect.

Proof required

Submit: weekly training log exported from Strava or Garmin Connect showing 24+ weeks, peak weeks ≥12 hours, and individual discipline milestones (200K+ bike week, 30K+ long run week, 4K+ swim week).

What gets checked

  • Log covers 24+ consecutive weeks exported from GPS — not manually estimated
  • Peak weeks show 12+ total training hours split across swim, bike, and run
  • All three discipline milestones are identifiable in specific weeks

Common mistakes

  • Neglecting the swim: most Ironman rookies overtrain run and bike while undertraining swim — the swim is non-negotiable and sets race-day confidence
  • Skipping brick workouts: not practising bike-to-run transitions in training leaves the physiological adaptation to running on tired bike legs undeveloped

What a verifier looks for

  • Does the GPS log show 24+ consecutive weeks with no unexplained multi-week gaps?
  • Are peak weeks showing 12+ total hours across all three disciplines?
  • Are the three discipline milestones (200K+ bike, 30K+ run, 4K+ swim in one week) identifiable with specific dates?

Cross the full Ironman finish line within 17 hours

1 race day

Finish the 3.8K swim, 180K bike, and 42.2K run within the official 17-hour cutoff of a sanctioned full Ironman event. The finisher certificate with your name and M-dot branding is the definitive proof.

Proof required

Submit: official Ironman finisher certificate downloaded from the Ironman athlete tracking portal, showing your name, race name, and finish time within the 17-hour cutoff.

What gets checked

  • Certificate is from the official Ironman athlete tracking portal — not a third-party printout
  • Finish time is within the 17-hour cutoff for the specific race
  • Race name is an officially branded Ironman event (or equivalent WSTC/Challenge-branded full-iron distance)

Common mistakes

  • Cutoff mismanagement: not tracking split times at the swim and T1 to know whether the bike cutoff is at risk — Ironman has multiple intermediate cutoffs
  • Arriving under-fuelled at the run: calorie intake on the bike is where most full Ironman races are won or lost — practise race nutrition in training, not on race day
