Complete a 12-week CrossFit fundamentals programme
12 weeks
Complete a 12-week CrossFit fundamentals programme at a CrossFit affiliate gym covering the nine foundational movements (air squat, front squat, overhead squat, shoulder press, push press, push jerk, deadlift, sumo deadlift high pull, medicine ball clean) and basic gymnastics (pull-up progressions, ring rows, push-ups) and metabolic conditioning. The CrossFit Open requires proficiency across all these movement categories under fatigue — attempting it without a structured foundations phase produces injury, not fitness.
Proof required
Submit your CrossFit gym membership record or programme completion document showing 12 weeks of on-ramp or fundamentals training, with your name and gym name visible. Include your CrossFit.com athlete profile URL showing affiliate gym affiliation if you have created one.
What gets checked
- Membership record or programme completion document from a CrossFit affiliate showing 12 weeks of attendance
- Gym name and your name visible on the document
- CrossFit.com athlete profile URL (if created) — profiles are free and allow Open registration
Common mistakes
- Attending a generic HIIT gym and calling it CrossFit — the CrossFit Open requires registration through CrossFit.com and scores submitted to an affiliate gym judge; a non-affiliate gym cannot validate your score
- Skipping the fundamentals programme and joining general classes immediately — overhead squat and kipping pull-up technique requires progressive loading that a fundamentals programme provides
- Not creating a CrossFit.com athlete profile before the Open registration deadline — registration closes weeks before the competition starts

What a verifier looks for
- Check that the gym is a CrossFit affiliate — the affiliate name should be searchable on crossfit.com/find-a-gym
- 12 weeks of attendance is the minimum — ask what the fundamentals programme covered and whether Olympic weightlifting was included
- CrossFit.com athlete profile is optional at M1 but essential by M3 — flag its absence and remind the submitter to create one before the Open registration closes

Complete CrossFit Open workout standards in training
4 weeks
Complete at least one representative CrossFit Open workout from a previous year (available free on CrossFit.com) under the official movement standards, with all reps judged by a coach or experienced CrossFit member. Practising to the exact Open standard — full range of motion, lockout, depth requirements — in training prevents the common experience of being no-repped repeatedly during the actual Open for movements that felt correct in untested training.
Proof required
Submit your score from a previous CrossFit Open workout (year and workout number stated, e.g. '23.1'), including total reps or time, movement standards you were judged against, and the name and role of the person who judged you (coach, L1 trainer, or experienced CrossFit member). Include a gym whiteboard photo showing the workout, your name, and your score if available.
What gets checked
- Specific previous Open workout identified (e.g. 22.3, 23.2) with official movement standards applied
- Total score (reps, rounds, or time) recorded
- Judge's name and role stated — self-judged attempts do not satisfy this milestone
Common mistakes
- Judging your own attempt and not having a qualified observer watch — the Open requires a judge; practising without one means you don't know if your movement standards would pass
- Choosing a workout from the wrong track (Rx when you should be on Scaled) and DNFing at the first movement — look at historical workouts and choose a benchmark workout appropriate to your current level
- Not recording your score and just noting 'I did it' — the whiteboard photo with name and score is the standard CrossFit proof format

What a verifier looks for
- Verify the workout reference is a real CrossFit Open workout — check games.crossfit.com/workouts/open for the year and number stated
- Judge must be named — an experienced CrossFit L1 or coach is preferred; a peer who has completed multiple Opens is the minimum
- Whiteboard photo with name and score is the standard format — if no photo, ask for a gym sign-in record showing the session date

Complete all CrossFit Open workouts and submit validated scores
3 weeks (one workout per week during the Open)
Complete all three CrossFit Open workouts in the current year's Open, submit scores through CrossFit.com with a validated judge for each workout, and receive your final global and country ranking on the CrossFit Games leaderboard. The CrossFit Open is the largest annual CrossFit competition — results are publicly searchable on the CrossFit Games leaderboard by athlete name, making scores independently verifiable.
Proof required
Submit your CrossFit Games athlete profile URL (games.crossfit.com/athlete/[your-id]) showing your Open scores for all three workouts of the current year. Scores must show as 'validated' on the leaderboard, not 'pending'. Include your final global and age-group ranking.
What gets checked
- CrossFit Games leaderboard URL showing your name and validated scores for all three Open workouts
- All three scores show as 'validated' — pending or unvalidated scores require a judge submission that was not completed
- Final ranking shown — even last place in your age group and region is a legitimate Open completion
Common mistakes
- Forgetting to submit the score on CrossFit.com by the weekly submission deadline — scores must be submitted within 12 hours of the workout window closing, not just completed in the gym
- Not having a judge present and therefore being unable to submit a validated score — every Open workout requires a judge, and un-judged scores cannot be validated
- Attempting the Rx track when the Scaled track would produce a validated score — a scaled score that is fully validated is a better outcome than an Rx DNF with no score

What a verifier looks for
- Search the submitter's name on games.crossfit.com — scores and rankings are publicly visible and do not require access to the submitter's profile login
- All three workouts must show as 'validated' — a score labelled 'pending' or missing means the judge submission was incomplete
- Scaled track scores are fully valid — do not penalise a Scaled completion; the outcome is 'complete the Open', not 'complete Rx'
