Write the complete picture book or early reader manuscript. Children's picture books are typically 500–1,000 words (ages 3–7), early readers are 1,500–5,000 words (ages 5–8), and chapter books for middle grade are 20,000–50,000 words (ages 8–12). The age range determines the word count, vocabulary level, and page structure. A picture book manuscript is complete when every page turn is planned — picture books are not illustrated prose, they are a collaboration between words and images, and the page structure must be planned before illustration begins.
Proof required
Share your completed manuscript. State the target age range and word count. If this is a picture book, include a page-turn breakdown — note what happens on each page or spread. Write one sentence on what emotion or question you want a child reader to carry away from the book.
