Publish First Short Story

Elective. First fiction published in a literary magazine or journal. Submitting to real editors forces craft precision that writing for yourself does not. The rejection rate teaches the market before you commit a year to a novel.

Write and Publish an Essay

Elective. Personal essay as a parallel form — not fiction, but shares the craft of scene, voice, and structure. Proof is a published URL.

Write a Novel

Elective. First complete novel draft — 50,000+ words. Path hero. Word count export from writing software + first and last page. Draft completion, not publication, is the milestone.

2. 2Write 40,000 words — the draft is past the halfway mark
3. 3Complete the first draft — full manuscript at target word count

Write a Children's Book

Elective. Short-form adjacent to fiction — high illustration demand, different market. Proof: complete illustrated manuscript submitted to at least one publisher or uploaded to a public portfolio.

1. 1Complete the manuscript — story, structure, and age range confirmed
2. 2Revise with feedback from at least one child reader and one adult reader
3. 3Submit to 5+ publishers or self-publish with public availability

Complete a Screenwriting Script

Elective. Lateral form — story structure in screenplay format. Proof: completed script in FDX/PDF format showing 90+ pages (feature) or 10–30 pages (short) + written feedback from a named reader.

Write and Publish a Non-Fiction Book

Elective. Nonfiction branch for writers whose primary work is research-driven or memoir. Proof: published book (any platform) or full manuscript with at least one round of external reader feedback.
