Film Production

Pre-production. Production. Post.

Film production at undergraduate level is a production chain with genuine prerequisite dependencies: pre-production planning cannot be skipped because the shoot is planned in the documents it produces. Every step requires both a production artifact (the footage, the cut, the package) and a documentation artifact (the shooting script, the production plan, the editorial rationale). DaVinci Resolve is free for all post-production work. Studio critique by a qualified director, cinematographer, or editor required at every step; peer-only review is not accepted.

Film Pre-Production Package

Required. Pre-production is the genuine prerequisite for all production work — a shoot without a shooting script, shot list, and production plan cannot be evaluated against a defined intent. Proof requires a complete pre-production package: shooting script or shot-for-shot storyboard, shot list with camera specifications, location scouting notes, and a production schedule. Qualified director, producer, or film tutor review required. Genuine prerequisite for production shoot (seq 20).

Film Production Shoot

Required. Production shoot follows directly from the pre-production package — the footage is shot against the specifications documented at seq 10. Proof requires: a screened rough cut (minimum 3 minutes), behind-the-scenes documentation (at least 10 photographs from the shoot), and a debrief note explaining what changed from the pre-production plan and why. Qualified director or cinematographer review required. Genuine dependency on design-film-pre-production-package (seq 10).

Film Post-Production

Elective. Post-production — picture lock, sound mix, and colour grade on the footage from seq 20. DaVinci Resolve (free) is the accepted proof tool for both editing and colour grading. Proof requires a finished cut (picture lock), an exported audio mix with at minimum dialogue clarity addressed, and a before/after colour grade comparison. Qualified editor or colourist review required.

Film Portfolio & Screening

Elective. Capstone portfolio screening: a minimum of 2 finished short films (or one film plus a production package) screened to a real audience or reviewed in a live session by a qualified director, cinematographer, or external panel. Proof requires a screenable file (online link or physical screening documentation), audience or panel feedback notes, and a director's statement. Integrating capstone for the path.
