English Language Arts Progression

Read, write, argue — one proven step at a time.

A sequential K–10 English Language Arts track covering six phases from phonics and early reading through advanced composition with research and citations. Each phase requires evidence reviewed by a parent, teacher, or qualified adult reader — no phase can be started until the previous phase is complete. The final phase produces a 600–800-word research essay with in-text citations, reviewed by a teacher or adult reader.

Phonics & Early Reading

Grades K–1. Decoding and reading fluency — the prerequisite for all comprehension work. Proof: parent or teacher confirms the student reads aloud a 100-word passage accurately and answers 3 of 4 comprehension questions correctly.

Reading Comprehension

Grades 2–3. Understanding what is read, not just decoding words. Identifying main idea and supporting details from both fiction and non-fiction. Proof: written chapter book summary reviewed by parent or teacher, or 80%+ on a comprehension quiz.

Grammar & Mechanics

Grades 3–5. The tools of clear writing — parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation. Running alongside comprehension development. Proof: 80%+ on Khan Academy Grammar mastery meter or teacher-graded test.

Paragraph Writing

Grades 4–6. The foundational unit of academic writing: topic sentence, supporting details, closing sentence. Proof: 3 teacher-reviewed paragraphs scoring 3 of 4 on a 4-point rubric.

Grades 6–8. Thesis-driven 5-paragraph essays. The most-tested writing format in secondary school and standardised tests. Proof: one complete essay reviewed by a teacher scoring 3 of 4 on all rubric dimensions.

Grades 7–10. Research-based or persuasive writing with cited sources — the final milestone of the Phase 1 ELA track. Proof: 600–800-word essay reviewed by a teacher or qualified adult reader; evidence correctly cited and argument logically structured.
