Identify parts of speech in sentences

Label nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, and prepositions in sentences from a worksheet or passage. A parent or teacher gives 10 sentences and asks the student to underline or label each part of speech. The goal is application to real sentences, not just definition recall.
Proof required
Submit a photo of a 10-sentence worksheet with each part of speech labelled (using abbreviations: N, V, ADJ, ADV, PRN, PREP) and a parent or teacher note confirming the answers are correct.
What gets checked
- All 6 parts of speech correctly identified at least once across the 10 sentences
- 8 of 10 sentences labelled correctly (major parts of speech correct even if minor errors in prepositions)
- Student does not confuse adjectives and adverbs — adjectives modify nouns, adverbs modify verbs
Common mistakes
- Confusing adjectives and adverbs — 'she runs quickly' (quickly is an ADV modifying 'runs') vs 'she is quick' (quick is an ADJ modifying 'she') — test both types explicitly
- Learning definitions without application — knowing 'an adjective describes a noun' doesn't help if the student can't identify which word in 'the tall girl' is the adjective

What a verifier looks for
- Check adjective/adverb distinction specifically — it's the most common confusion at this level
- 8 of 10 sentences correct is the bar — allow minor preposition errors if the major parts of speech (N, V, ADJ, ADV) are correctly identified
- Ask the student to explain one label: 'why is this word an adjective?' — they should reference what word it modifies

Apply punctuation and sentence structure rules
2 weeks (20 min/day)
Use capital letters, periods, question marks, exclamation points, commas (in lists and compound sentences), and apostrophes (contractions and possessives) correctly. Edit a 10-sentence passage with deliberate errors and correct each one. The student should also identify complete sentences vs fragments and run-ons.
Proof required
Submit a photo of a 10-sentence editing exercise with all errors identified and corrected (punctuation, capitalization, fragments, run-ons) and a parent or teacher note confirming the corrections are accurate.
What gets checked
- All deliberate errors identified — no missed corrections
- Comma rules applied correctly: list commas AND compound-sentence commas (before and, but, or)
- Apostrophes in contractions (it's, they're) and possessives (the dog's collar) both present and correctly applied
Common mistakes
- Confusing it's (it is) with its (possessive) — this is the most frequently missed punctuation rule at this level
- Adding commas before every 'and' without checking whether both parts are complete sentences — commas join compound sentences, not just any two words connected by 'and'
