Make an Art Portfolio

Create 5 or more original pieces of visual art in any medium — drawing, painting, digital art, photography, collage, or mixed media — and publish them together in one place. Use Canva (free), Google Slides (free), a physical portfolio you photograph, or any public platform. The goal is to make something and show it. Proof: a link to your published portfolio or a photo of the physical version.

Complete 5 finished pieces of artwork across at least 2 different subjects or styles. A portfolio is not 5 pieces in the same style — it demonstrates range and intentionality. The pieces can be any visual medium: drawing, painting, digital illustration, photography, collage, printmaking, or mixed media. Each piece should be complete and photographed or digitised to a quality that shows the work accurately — an out-of-focus phone photo of a painting does not accurately represent the painting.

Proof required

Share images of 5 finished pieces. For each piece, state the medium and subject. Write one sentence on which piece you think is the strongest and why.

What gets checked

5 pieces are shared, each complete and clearly photographed or digitised.
At least 2 different subjects or styles are represented across the 5 pieces.
Which piece is strongest and why — demonstrates critical self-assessment.

Common mistakes

5 pieces in the same subject and style: a portfolio of 5 near-identical pieces demonstrates consistency, not range.
Work-in-progress pieces included: 'this one I'm still finishing' — the milestone requires 5 complete pieces.
Photo quality too low to assess the work: portfolio photography is part of portfolio making.

Publish the portfolio online in a form that is accessible to anyone and share it in one relevant community. The publication step transforms private work into a public body of work. The community share step is the minimum distribution action — not to accumulate followers, but to expose the work to people who might give meaningful feedback. Relevant communities include: online art communities (DeviantArt, ArtStation for digital work, the r/ArtFundamentals subreddit), local creative groups, or college/university peer groups.

Proof required

Share the public URL of the portfolio. Share evidence of the community post (screenshot of the post in the relevant community, with the community name visible). Write one sentence on why you chose this community to share with.

Portfolio URL is public and accessible without login.
Community post is documented — screenshot with community name visible.
Why this community was chosen — demonstrates awareness of the audience, not just the first available platform.

Common mistakes

Portfolio shared only with personal contacts: 'I sent it to my friends' — the community share must be in a space where the creator does not know most of the audience.
Community post without the portfolio URL: 'I posted that I was an artist looking for feedback' without the actual portfolio.
Portfolio URL requires login to access.

4–8 weeks after M2

Expand the portfolio to 10 pieces, and write a short artist statement (150–250 words) that articulates what connects the work — the unifying theme, question, or aesthetic. 10 pieces with no connecting thread is a collection; 10 pieces connected by a statement of intent is a portfolio. The artist statement does not need to be polished for publication — it is a tool for the creator to understand what they are making and communicate it to others.

Share the updated portfolio with 10+ pieces. Write your artist statement (150–250 words) — what connects these pieces, what you are exploring or interested in, and what you want viewers to notice. Share the link to the published portfolio.
