Photography — Professional Practice

Brief. Shoot. Edit. Deliver.

Professional photography at undergraduate level is brief-response work: a client specifies a communication goal, you plan, shoot, edit, and deliver images that satisfy it — and you defend your technical and aesthetic decisions in a critique session. Every step requires both a brief-response artifact (the images) and a documentation artifact (technical notes, post-production log, client delivery files). Camera access is the only hardware requirement: all editing tools have free versions (DaVinci Resolve, Darktable, RawTherapee). Critique by a qualified photographer or photography tutor required at every step.

Photography Brief Response

Required. Professional brief response is the foundational photography proof — a client (real or real-world-equivalent) specifies requirements, and the photographer plans, shoots, and delivers images that satisfy them. The brief must be documented before the shoot; the post-shoot technical edit log and client-ready deliverable set are submitted as proof. Qualified photographer or photography tutor review required. Genuine prerequisite for all subsequent work on this path.

Photographic Technical Mastery

Elective. Technical competence proof — demonstrating deliberate control of exposure (ISO, aperture, shutter speed), depth of field, white balance, and lighting across a minimum of 20 images shot for specific technical purposes. All images submitted with EXIF data intact. Qualified photographer or photography tutor review required.

Photographic Series Development

Elective. Sustained photographic series — a minimum 12-image coherent series developed over at least 6 weeks with documented concept, shooting plan, and editorial selection rationale. The series must have a clear conceptual thread that the photographer can articulate and defend in critique. Qualified photographer, curator, or photography tutor review required.

Photography Portfolio Review

Elective. Capstone portfolio critique: a curated selection of at least 15 images from across the path reviewed in a live critique session by a qualified photographer or photography tutor. Critique documents: image selection rationale, technical decisions defended, series coherence challenged. Integrating capstone for the path.

Free comprehensive technical photography resource — exposure, depth of field, RAW processing, colour management, and lens optics explained with interactive tools and calculators. Use for the technical mastery step: each tutorial provides the technical vocabulary and measurement framework for documenting deliberate camera control decisions in your proof.

Free photography technique resource covering composition, lighting, editing workflows, and genre-specific guidance (portrait, documentary, landscape). Use to build shooting plans for the brief response and series development steps, and to learn RAW processing in free tools (Darktable and RawTherapee tutorials included).

Free lighting education resource by photographer David Hobby — systematic tutorials on using off-camera flash for portrait, product, and editorial photography. Use for the technical mastery and brief response steps when brief requirements include controlled artificial lighting: the Lighting 101 and Lighting 102 series are the most systematic free lighting curricula available.

Free platform showcasing contemporary photography — featured series, open calls for submissions, and photographer interviews. Use for the photographic series development step: understanding what coherent contemporary series look like editorially, and for the portfolio capstone: finding real open submission opportunities and understanding portfolio presentation standards.
