- Study plan includes at least one hands-on simulation tool session (Cisco Packet Tracer or GNS3) — Network Troubleshooting cannot be learned from videos and flashcards alone
Common mistakes
- Starting study from domain 1 without a diagnostic — candidates often assume subnetting (Networking Concepts) is their weak area when troubleshooting or operations are the actual gap; the diagnostic resolves this
- Not planning time for hands-on practice — N10-009 has performance-based questions (PBQs) at the start of the exam that require configuring or troubleshooting a simulated network; no amount of reading prepares for PBQs without hands-on practice

Complete the study program and validate readiness with practice exams
5–10 weeks of active study
Work through all planned study materials, ensuring hands-on Packet Tracer practice covers VLANs, routing (static and OSPF), subnetting, and basic troubleshooting scenarios. The exam begins with performance-based questions (PBQs) that require configuring or diagnosing a simulated network under time pressure; candidates who have not practised in a simulation tool consistently fail or waste too much time on PBQs. Validate readiness with at minimum two full-length practice exams (90 minutes each, up to 90 questions) before booking. Target ≥80% on practice exams — the actual passing score is 720/900 (scaled), and practising to 80% provides a meaningful buffer.
Proof required
Submit your two most recent full-length practice exam scores (with date, total score, and domain breakdown), a screenshot or export of your completed study log or course modules showing which resources you finished, and a readiness statement (200–300 words) covering: the topic type you found hardest and how you addressed it, one Packet Tracer scenario you built or troubleshot, and whether you feel ready to sit the exam.
What gets checked
- Two full-length practice exams completed in the last two weeks before sitting, under timed conditions (90 minutes) — untimed practice does not build the time management the PBQs consume
- Evidence of hands-on Packet Tracer or GNS3 practice included in the readiness statement — at least one specific scenario described (e.g. 'configured a VLAN trunk between two switches and verified inter-VLAN routing')
- Practice exam scores ≥80% — the Network+ passing threshold is 720/900 on a scaled score; practising to 80% provides a buffer for question variance on the real exam
Common mistakes
- Spending all study time watching videos and zero time in Packet Tracer — videos explain concepts; PBQs test the ability to apply them in a live simulation; these are different skills that need different practice
- Skipping subnetting practice because it feels abstract — subnetting appears in multiple Network+ domains and is tested directly in the Networking Concepts section; fluency requires repeated calculation practice, not conceptual understanding alone

Submit your CompTIA CertMetrics account result page (screenshot or PDF) showing your score (≥720), the 'PASS' status, and the exam date; and the public URL of your CompTIA Network+ digital badge from Credly.
