Compile evidence across core early years practice areas
4–6 weeks (compiled across placement)
Compile a professional portfolio demonstrating your practice across a minimum of four early years competency areas from your placement: observation and assessment, planning and provision, environment and resources, working with families, child development knowledge, or safeguarding and welfare. For each area, select and annotate one to two pieces of evidence from your supervised placement. All evidence must be anonymised and collected with supervisor approval.
Proof required
Submit portfolio evidence for minimum four competency areas (one to two pieces per area, each with a minimum 150-word annotation explaining what it demonstrates). Fully anonymised.

What a verifier looks for
- Confirm current enhanced DBS/background check clearance is documented — enhanced DBS required for early childhood settings with under-5s
- Confirm completion of a recognised safeguarding training module is documented — paediatric first aid also expected in most jurisdictions for under-5s
- Verify qualified supervisor attestation is present — named setting manager or lead practitioner (EYFS Level 5 or equivalent) — peer verification is NEVER acceptable
- Check full anonymisation of all evidence — no names, setting identifiers, or parent details
- Verify minimum four competency areas are covered with annotated evidence
Produce critical reflection on professional development
1–2 weeks
Write a critical practice reflection (minimum 600 words) addressing: what your placement evidence demonstrates about your current professional strengths, where your practice needs development, one specific incident from your placement where your practice improved as a direct result of supervisor feedback, and how you will continue developing after the placement ends. Maintain full anonymisation of any children, families, or colleagues referenced.
Proof required
Submit your critical practice reflection (minimum 600 words, fully anonymised) with supervisor sign-off confirming it accurately represents your placement experience.

- Reflection identifies specific strengths and development areas — not general statements
- Specific incident demonstrates how supervisor feedback changed practice
- Post-placement development plan is specific — not 'continue learning'

Review portfolio with qualified supervisor and produce final version
1 week (review + revision)
Share your complete portfolio with your qualified placement supervisor in a portfolio review meeting (minimum 20 minutes). The supervisor should identify one area where your evidence is strong and one area where the evidence or reflection needs further development. Produce a final revised portfolio incorporating the feedback, with a revision note (minimum 200 words) documenting what changed and why.
Proof required
Submit: (1) review meeting record (date, supervisor name and role, specific feedback — anonymised, minimum half page), (2) final revised portfolio, (3) revision note (minimum 200 words).
