Conduct a structured early years environment assessment

In your supervised early childhood placement, conduct a structured assessment of the learning environment (indoor and/or outdoor) using a recognised framework (EYFS Characteristics of Effective Learning, Ofsted quality indicators, or an equivalent validated tool). Document your assessment of six or more environment features with specific evidence for each judgement. Your assessment must be conducted with supervisor approval and all identifying information must be anonymised.
Proof required
Submit your environment assessment document (six or more features assessed with specific evidence and framework reference, anonymised — no setting name or location). Include supervisor approval note.
What gets checked
- Six or more environment features assessed with specific evidence — not general impressions
- Each judgement is referenced to the named framework

Common mistakes
- Fewer than six features assessed — insufficient for a comprehensive environment picture

What a verifier looks for
- Confirm current enhanced DBS/background check clearance is documented — enhanced DBS required for early childhood settings
- Confirm completion of a recognised safeguarding training module — paediatric first aid documentation also expected for under-5s in most jurisdictions
- Verify qualified supervisor attestation is present — named setting manager or lead practitioner (EYFS Level 5 or equivalent) — peer verification is NEVER acceptable
- Check setting is fully anonymised — no name, location, or identifiable details
- Verify assessment is referenced to the named framework for each judgement
Propose evidence-based environment improvements

Based on your environment assessment, identify three specific improvements to the learning environment. For each, produce: a description of the current state, the specific change proposed, an explanation of how the change will support children's learning and development (referenced to EYFS or equivalent), and a practical implementation note (what materials, space, or resources are needed). Discuss your proposals with your supervisor before finalising.
Proof required
Submit your three environment improvement proposals (current state, proposed change, learning rationale with framework reference, implementation note) and a brief supervisor discussion note confirming proposals were discussed.
What gets checked
- Three specific improvement proposals — not vague suggestions
- Each proposal has a learning rationale referenced to the framework
- Proposals are practically realistic — materials and resources are identified
Common mistakes
- Proposals are generic — 'add more books' without specific learning rationale
- No framework reference in learning rationale
- Proposals are impractical — materials or resources not available in the setting

Implement one improvement and document impact
2–3 weeks (placement-based)
With supervisor approval, implement one of your proposed environment improvements in the setting. Document the implementation process and observe the impact over a minimum of one week (three or more observation sessions). Produce an impact reflection (minimum 400 words) assessing whether the change had the intended effect on children's learning or engagement. Maintain full anonymisation throughout.
Proof required
Submit: (1) implementation documentation (what was changed, when, how — anonymised), (2) three or more observation session notes recording children's response to the change (anonymised), (3) impact reflection (minimum 400 words). Include supervisor sign-off.
What gets checked
- Three or more observation sessions documenting children's response
- Impact reflection assesses whether the change had the intended effect — not just whether children liked it
- Supervisor sign-off confirming the implementation and observations
Common mistakes
- Fewer than three observation sessions — insufficient to assess impact
- Impact reflection only documents children's positive response, not learning impact
- No supervisor sign-off
