Diagnose your current TOEFL iBT level across all four sections
1–2 weeks (diagnostic phase)
TOEFL iBT tests four integrated skills: Reading (54–72 minutes, academic passages), Listening (41–57 minutes, lectures and conversations), Speaking (17 minutes, 4 tasks including integrated tasks requiring notes on listening/reading), and Writing (50 minutes, 2 tasks including an integrated essay). TOEFL 100+ requires approximately 25+ per section on average. Take a full official TOEFL iBT practice test (ETS provides free official materials) under timed conditions. Score Reading and Listening against official answer keys. Self-assess Speaking and Writing using the official ETS rubrics. Identify your two lowest-scoring sections.
Proof required
Submit your diagnostic score sheet (Reading and Listening scored against official keys, Speaking and Writing self-assessed using ETS rubrics) and a 1-page action plan identifying your two weakest sections and the specific skill gap within each.
What gets checked
- Diagnostic used official ETS materials — not a third-party TOEFL simulator whose scoring may not reflect the real exam.
- Writing was done under timed conditions — 20 minutes for Task 1 (Integrated), 30 minutes for Task 2 (Independent).
- Action plan identifies a specific skill gap — 'Speaking section is weak' is not actionable; 'Speaking Task 3 (integrated): I struggle to synthesise the listening with the reading in 30 seconds of preparation' is.
Common mistakes
- Using an unofficial TOEFL simulator whose tasks and scoring differ from the real exam — ETS materials only.
- Skipping Speaking because recording yourself is uncomfortable — TOEFL Speaking cannot be avoided and requires specific practice.
- Action plan that lists sections without identifying the specific skill gap within each section.

Complete targeted preparation and a full mock test
6–8 weeks
Complete 6 weeks of targeted preparation on your two weakest sections (minimum 4 practice sessions per week per section). TOEFL Integrated tasks (Speaking Tasks 3–4, Writing Task 1) are the most distinctive feature of TOEFL vs other English tests — these require synthesising a reading passage and a listening track under time pressure. Practise integrated tasks specifically, not just general English. Take a second full mock test at 6 weeks. Compare diagnostic and mock scores. Score Reading and Listening against keys; use ETS rubrics for Speaking and Writing.
Proof required
Submit your practice log (6 weeks, section targeted, minimum 4 sessions per week per weak section), your mock test scores, and a 1-paragraph comparison of diagnostic vs mock performance — what improved, what did not.
What gets checked
- Practice log shows section-targeted practice — not 'studied TOEFL generally' but specific sections at specific dates.
- Mock test was timed — all four sections in sequence with the correct time allocations.
- Comparison paragraph is specific — 'Reading improved from 22 to 26; Speaking stayed at 20 because Task 3 integrated still takes me too long to synthesise' is specific.
Common mistakes
- Preparing only for the two weakest sections without maintaining the stronger sections — a strong section can decline without maintenance.
- Practising TOEFL reading and listening in isolation without practising the integrated tasks that combine both — integrated tasks are the most important TOEFL-specific skill.
- Mock test taken after insufficient preparation — 4 sessions per week for 6 weeks is the minimum.

Sit the official TOEFL iBT and receive score report
Test date + 4–8 days for official score
Book and sit the official TOEFL iBT at an authorised ETS test centre or via TOEFL iBT Home Edition (if available in your country). Scores are reported within 4–8 days of the test date. TOEFL iBT scores are valid for 2 years. This milestone requires a total score of 100 or above (out of 120).
Proof required
Submit your official TOEFL iBT score report showing your total score and section scores (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing), test date, and candidate name.
What gets checked
- Total score is 100 or above — section balance matters for specific applications but the total is the milestone gate.
- Score report is official — issued by ETS, showing all four section scores.
- Score is within the 2-year validity window if being used for an application.
Common mistakes
- Score of exactly 100 with a very low individual section (e.g. Speaking 18) — some universities require minimum section scores; note this when presenting the result.
- Screenshot of MyBest Scores rather than the official score from the specific test date — MyBest Scores combine highest sections across multiple test dates and are not accepted by all institutions.
- TOEFL Essentials score submitted instead of TOEFL iBT — these are different tests.
