Spanish A2 has one grammatical challenge more complex than the equivalent French or German level: the preterite/imperfect distinction. These two past tenses are both required at A2 and divide based on whether an action is completed and discrete (pretérito indefinido) or background, habitual, or in progress (pretérito imperfecto). This distinction is tested in every Spanish past-tense narrative. Reflexive verbs (levantarse, ducharse, sentirse) are also A2 core and must be handled correctly before B1.
Proof required
Record a 4-minute unscripted account of a memorable day or event in Spanish. Use pretérito indefinido at least 5 times for completed discrete actions, pretérito imperfecto at least 3 times for background descriptions or habitual actions, and at least 2 reflexive verbs. Write 120 words on the preterite/imperfect distinction specifically — describe two moments from your account where you had to choose between them and explain your reasoning.
What gets checked
- Preterite and imperfect are both present and used in functionally correct contexts — the common A2 error is using only preterite throughout (treating imperfect as advanced); if all past verbs are preterite, the distinction hasn't been internalized
- The two reflexive verbs are present and correctly formed — 'me levanté', 'me duché', 'me sentí' in preterite form; reflexive agreement errors are common at A2
- The distinction account applies to actual sentences from the recording — it's not a general rule recitation but a specific explanation of two actual choices made
