Portuguese B1 introduces the most distinctive grammatical feature of Portuguese among European languages: the future subjunctive (futuro do conjuntivo/subjuntivo). Portuguese uses the future subjunctive in temporal clauses after 'quando', 'assim que', 'logo que', and in conditional clauses after 'se' (if — real/possible condition). 'Quando eu chegar em casa, vou ligar' (When I arrive home, I'll call) — the subordinate clause 'chegar' is future subjunctive. In Spanish, this same structure uses present subjunctive; in French and Italian, it uses future indicative. This is Portuguese-specific and must be acquired at B1.
Proof required
Record a 6-minute unscripted account of your plans for the next few months including at least 3 future subjunctive constructions ('quando + subjunctive', 'se + subjunctive' for real conditions, or 'assim que + subjunctive'). Include at least 2 present subjunctive uses (for wishes or opinions: 'quero que', 'espero que', 'é importante que'), and at least 1 personal infinitive (a construction where each person's infinitive takes an ending: 'é bom estudarmos juntos' vs. 'é bom estudares'). Write 150 words on one moment where you found yourself needing the future subjunctive in natural Portuguese and how you handled it.
What gets checked
- The future subjunctive constructions are correctly formed — 'quando eu chegar' (not 'quando eu chegarei'), 'se você quiser' (not 'se você quer') — using indicative future after 'quando' is a systematic Portuguese error; using present subjunctive after 'quando' (Spanish pattern) is also incorrect in Portuguese
- The present subjunctive uses are correctly triggered — they should follow verbs of will, emotion, or recommendation ('quero que + subjunctive') rather than appearing after opinion expressions that take indicative in Portuguese
- The personal infinitive use (if included) demonstrates awareness of this unique Portuguese feature — even one correct use ('é melhor estudarmos juntos') shows B1 Portuguese grammatical range beyond Spanish and French B1
