PMP (Project Management Professional) certification requires a verified eligibility before you can sit the exam. Requirements: a four-year degree + 36 months of project management experience, OR a high school diploma + 60 months of PM experience. In both cases, 35 hours of formal project management education is required. Document your eligibility: a list of your PM projects (project name, role, dates, hours leading), a summary of your 35 hours of PM education (training provider, topics, dates), and an account with PMI (Project Management Institute). Submit the PMI application online. PMI may audit your application — if audited, you must provide supporting documentation within 90 days.
Proof required
Submit your PMI application confirmation email (with application number and status 'Submitted' or 'Approved'), your experience summary (project names, dates, and hours as entered in the application), and your 35-hour education certificate or transcript.
What gets checked
- PMI application is submitted — confirmation email with application number must be present.

Common mistakes

- Application submitted without verifying the experience entries total the required months — PMI calculates hours from months, not just from hours listed.
- Failing to save copies of all application materials before submission — PMI audit requires documentation at short notice.

Complete structured PMP exam preparation

The PMP exam (180 questions, 230 minutes) tests the Examination Content Outline (ECO) across three domains: People, Process, and Business Environment. The exam is approximately 50% predictive (waterfall) and 50% agile/hybrid. Complete a structured preparation programme: study all three ECO domains, complete at least 500 practice questions from a recognised source (not random online question banks), and take two full-length timed mock exams (180 questions, 230 minutes each). Score each mock exam and identify your weakest ECO domain.
Proof required
Submit your two mock exam scores (total score and per-domain percentage if available), your study log (ECO domain, resource, hours), and a 1-page gap analysis identifying your weakest domain and the specific concept area within it that produced the most wrong answers.
What gets checked
- Mock exams were timed — 230 minutes for 180 questions is the real constraint.
- 500+ practice questions are from a recognised source — random internet question banks are often inaccurate or misaligned with the current ECO.
- Gap analysis identifies a specific concept area — not 'Process domain' but 'agile sprint planning and retrospective process questions'.
Common mistakes
- Preparation entirely PMBOK Guide reading without practice questions — PMBOK reading alone does not prepare for the application-based question format.
- Mock exams with no gap analysis — the purpose of the mock exam is to identify gaps, not to confirm readiness.
- Preparation that focuses on predictive (waterfall) methodology without covering agile and hybrid — the current exam is 50% agile/hybrid.

Pass the PMP exam and receive certification
Exam day + 1–2 days for badge issuance
Sit the PMP exam at a Pearson VUE test centre or online proctored, having scheduled within your approved application window. Pass the exam (PMI does not publish a specific passing score — the result is reported as Above Target, Target, Below Target, or Needs Improvement per domain). Receive your official digital certificate from PMI. PMP certification requires 60 PDUs (Professional Development Units) every 3 years for maintenance — note this requirement at certification.
Proof required
Submit a screenshot of your official PMI digital badge (issued via Credly) or your PMI certification page showing your name, PMP certification, and issue date.
What gets checked
- Digital badge is from the official Credly-issued PMI PMP badge — not a screenshot of the test result confirmation screen.
- Badge shows issue date within the last 2 years (for this milestone to be current).
- PDU maintenance requirement is acknowledged in a 1-sentence note.
Common mistakes
- Test result screen screenshot submitted instead of official digital badge — the badge is issued separately from the test result.
- Exam scheduled after the 1-year application window expired — re-application required if the window is missed.
- Passing in all domains at 'Below Target' — acceptable for certification but verifier should note it as a weak result.
