C1 writing is distinguished from B2 by lexical sophistication, register appropriateness, and structural complexity rather than just length. An essay or analytical piece written directly in the target language — without translation tools or AI writing assistance — and then critiqued by a native or near-native speaker reveals exactly where your production reaches C1 and where it still reads as advanced B2. The written feedback document is as important as the essay itself.

Proof required

Share your essay or analytical piece (600+ words, written directly in the target language on an abstract topic you chose). Share the written feedback from a native or near-native speaker (C1+ in the target language) naming at least three specific phrases or constructions that could be more natural or idiomatic, and at least one structural or register observation. Write 100 words on what you plan to revise based on this feedback.

What gets checked

Essay is 600+ words on an abstract topic that requires analysis or argument — a description of facts or events is not sufficient; interpretation, comparison, evaluation, or argument is required
Feedback names specific phrases or constructions in your text — general praise or vague suggestions ('a bit unnatural in places') does not meet the standard
Feedback reviewer is a native speaker or a verified C1+ speaker of the target language — feedback from a fellow learner at the same level is not valid

Common mistakes

Writing in your first language and then translating — the result reads as translated rather than produced in the target language; native speakers notice immediately and the feedback will reflect this rather than genuine C1 gaps
Using AI writing tools to improve the draft before the native-speaker review — the feedback will then be about the AI's gaps rather than yours; the point of M1 is to see YOUR current ceiling

Unlike app-based learning, every milestone in this outcome requires proof of real human communication — not a score on an app. At C1, the key distinction from B2 is the ability to sustain extended discourse on abstract or professional topics spontaneously, without preparation time. The topic is disclosed on the day — neither party prepares talking points in advance — and both sides of the recording must be audible throughout the full 30 minutes.

Share the audio or video recording of a 30+ minute conversation in the target language with a native or near-native speaker. The conversation topic must have been provided by the partner on the day of the recording — neither party saw the topic in advance. Both sides of the conversation must be audible. Include a written statement from the conversation partner confirming: the topic was not shared in advance, the conversation was unscripted, and their honest assessment of your fluency and any notable gaps they observed.

What gets checked

Recording is 30+ minutes with both sides of the conversation audible throughout — a recording where the partner cannot be heard does not demonstrate conversation, only monologue

Summarising this content in the target language — naming the implicit element you identified — and having a native speaker confirm that the implicit element is genuinely present tests comprehension depth rather than surface understanding. Unlike app-based learning, the proof requires real human verification, not a score on an app.

Share a link or title of a 20+ minute piece of authentic target-language media not created for language learners (news broadcast, documentary, academic lecture, or a podcast by native speakers for native speakers). Share a 300–400 word analytical summary in the target language covering: (a) the main argument, (b) one specific implicit meaning, irony, or subtext you identified, and (c) one observation about the speaker's register or tone. Share a written confirmation from a native or near-native speaker who has accessed the same source material, confirming that your main-argument summary is accurate and that the implicit element you identified is genuinely present.
