Build a working vocabulary foundation

4–6 weeks, building on A1 foundation (assumes A1 already completed). 30–45 minutes/day of active study, not passive app use.

Handle a 10-minute conversation on familiar topics

8–12 weeks from completing Milestone 1, depending on study intensity and how different your target language is from your native language. Book your first native-speaker conversation in week 1 of this milestone, not at the end — speaking practice from the start accelerates the rest.

Navigate a real-world transactional scenario

2–4 weeks. This milestone can often be completed in a single outing once you have the confidence from Milestone 2's conversation practice. If you don't live in a place where you can interact with native speakers in person, phone calls to businesses or services in your target language are an acceptable substitute.

Discuss simple future plans and past experiences

4–8 weeks from Milestone 3. Tense expansion is grammar-heavy and benefits from explicit study alongside conversation practice — pure immersion without grammar reference often leaves past/future tense underdeveloped at this stage.

Sustain a 20-minute unscripted conversation

6–10 weeks from Milestone 4. This is the integration milestone — less about learning new material and more about proving the previous four milestones' skills hold up under less controlled conditions.
