20 weeks · 3 milestones

Understand Japanese to a reasonable degree in everyday situations. Unlike app-based learning, every milestone requires proof of real human communication — not a score on an app.

3 milestones

JLPT N3 requires approximately 3,750 vocabulary items and 650 kanji. At this level, learners are expected to understand the general meaning of newspaper headlines and everyday written notices. Kanji study should prioritise Grade 4–5 Joyo kanji and compound words formed from known kanji. Vocabulary expansion focuses on abstract nouns (feelings, opinions, social concepts), formal register vocabulary, and connective expressions used in written Japanese.

Proof required

Complete a 100-item N3 vocabulary and kanji practice set and submit a photo with a score of 75% or above, plus a written list of 15 N3 vocabulary items from the test that you found difficult, each with a contextual example sentence you wrote yourself.

What gets checked

  • 75% or above on a 100-item N3 vocabulary/kanji practice set
  • 15 difficult-item list includes correct contextual example sentences (not dictionary definitions)
  • Example sentences use N3 grammar patterns, not only N5 structures
