German B2 requires moving from the grammatically correct but clearly foreign-sounding German of B1 into German that sounds natural, with register awareness (formal vs. informal), idiomatic expression, and reliable complex grammar including Konjunktiv I for reported speech (used extensively in German media) and strong verb paradigms. This milestone builds those specifically through documented production.
Proof required
Record a 6-minute unscripted explanation in German of a topic you know well — a subject from your field, a book, a technical process, a historical event. Use: Konjunktiv I at least twice (Er sagte, er sei...; Es heißt, dass...), at least 3 idiomatic phrases or collocations that go beyond textbook German, and at least 1 compound noun you've constructed yourself. Write 150 words on the register shift: what did you avoid saying because it would sound too formal or too informal for this context?
What gets checked
- Konjunktiv I is used correctly at least twice — this is a specific B2 marker because it appears constantly in German journalism and reported speech but is absent from A2/B1 teaching; its presence verifies engagement with authentic German text
- The three idiomatic phrases are genuinely idiomatic — not dictionary phrases or common learner expressions, but collocations or expressions that would occur naturally in German and don't translate word-for-word into English
- The register account is specific and shows awareness of German register norms — German has a sharper formal/informal split than English; the B2 test is whether the submitter is aware of it and can describe their choices
