German B1 requires reliable use of all four cases (nominative, accusative, dative, genitive), the Konjunktiv II for polite requests and hypotheticals, and the ability to link clauses with subordinating conjunctions that send the verb to the end. Without these, extended German conversation stalls at A2. This milestone builds those structures through real spoken production.
Proof required
Record a 5-minute unscripted opinion piece in German on a topic you care about — a film, a news issue, a hobby, a place. Use: at least 3 subordinating conjunctions (weil, dass, obwohl, wenn, bevor, nachdem), at least 2 Konjunktiv II forms (würde, wäre, hätte, könnte), and at least 1 genitive construction. Write 120 words on which conjunctions feel reliable in spontaneous speech vs. which still cause mid-sentence freezing.
What gets checked
- The three subordinating conjunctions are present and the verb is at the end of each subordinate clause — 'weil ich das gut finde' not 'weil ich finde das gut'; word order is the core B1 grammar test
- The Konjunktiv II forms appear and are used for genuine hypothetical or polite meaning, not as filler — 'ich würde das machen' meaning 'I would do that', not as a substitute for present tense
- The self-assessment names specific conjunctions by name and identifies which cause hesitation — this shows grammatical awareness that B1 requires, not just general 'German is hard' observation
