C1 reading means processing authentic literary, journalistic, and academic French effortlessly — not word-by-word, but meaning-first. C1 expression means formulating complex ideas, hypotheticals, and nuanced positions spontaneously without pausing to construct grammar. This milestone builds the language density needed before the C1 conversation proof, and produces a concrete evidence artifact of literary or academic engagement.
Proof required
Read one complete unabridged French novel, literary essay collection, or non-fiction book (minimum 200 pages, published for native adult readers — not for learners). Write a 600-word critical analysis in French: thesis, evidence from specific passages (quoted in French), and your evaluation of the argument or style. Include the exact pages and passages you cite.
What gets checked
- The work is genuinely adult-level French literature or non-fiction — not graded readers, not YA adaptations, not books written for learners. If in doubt, state the publisher and original audience
- The analysis has a thesis — a specific claim about the work that can be agreed or disagreed with — not a plot summary or impressionistic review
- French passages are quoted accurately, not paraphrased. Accuracy of quotation is a marker of genuine close reading rather than general impression
