Advance from A2 foundations into B1 territory: subjunctive for common expressions (il faut que, je voudrais que), conditional tense, relative clauses, and the ability to express opinions, past experiences, and future plans with connected reasoning. B1 requires not just knowing grammar but using it spontaneously to sustain extended conversation on a range of topics.
Proof required
Record a 5-minute unscripted monologue on a topic you're given 30 seconds to prepare — choose from: a recent trip or event, a strong opinion on something in the news, or plans you're excited about. The 30-second preparation time is real: pick your topic, start recording. Write 100 words on the grammar structures you notice yourself using fluently vs. still struggling with.
What gets checked
- The monologue demonstrates connected reasoning — not a list of simple sentences but ideas that build on each other using connectors (parce que, donc, cependant, d'ailleurs) and subordinate clauses
- At least one conditional or subjunctive structure appears naturally (not as a demonstration that you know it exists, but because the topic genuinely called for it)
- The grammar self-assessment is honest and specific — 'I struggle with subjunctive mood in spontaneous speech' is useful; 'Grammar is fine' is not a reflection
